Do you know who Gen X’ers are? Are you one? Well, for our purposes…if you were born between 1965 & 1983 (we included the Xennials, because there are many who identify more with the Gen X’ers), then yes – you are in fact a Gen X’er! Who cares?, you might ask…well – I do – because I am one! 1971 vintage to be exact 😉 But not just any Gen X’er…no…I am a Generation X Entrepreneur.
Generation X (born between 1965 & 1983) + Entrepreneur (business owner) = Generation X Entrepreneur
Technically, the word entrepreneur insinuates a level of risk involved in the business venture, but come on folks – I think we can agree that all business ventures have some level of risk to the owner involved. Do you agree? Great – let’s move on.
So here’s a few facts – other than the extreme obvious above, about Generation X Entrepreneurs:
- We range, as of 2021, anywhere from 38 – 56 years old. This means we are most likely anywhere from having our kids in middle school, high school, college or are complete empty nesters at this point. (there are exceptions of course!)
- We typically are starting to get more control over our own time and starting to think that we have paid our dues to the next generation and that now it is our turn. We have worked our corporate jobs, whether white or blue collar or anything in between, and now it is our time to live our dreams.
- Generation X is one of the HARDEST working generations…our parents lived through the Depression maybe, we know the value of hard work and earning a dollar – so we are willing to work for our success.
- Sometimes #3 is our greatest achilles heel…we tend to be martyrs, feeling like we have to work excruciatingly hard, put everyone else’s wants and needs before our own, self-care may be unheard of, etc…
- Because of #4, we might not be quick to latch onto new technologies that can make our lives so much easier. People are making money on Tik-Tok by shaking their hips to the beat and pointing to blurbs of text to sell their products – how can they see success that way??? We wouldn’t be caught doing such foolish things – how will anyone take our business seriously? Automation software can seem overwhelming to many because it takes some of the control away from us…and we Gen X’ers like to control every aspect of our businesses. Am I right?
- Generation X’ers were the first to be blessed with the Internet and all of the possibilities that came with it…yet we are quickly losing the home-field advantage to those coming up behind us!
Hi – I’m a Generation X Entrepreneur. I am not like many of those that I mentioned above. I love technology and automation. I take the measured risk in the hope of the greater reward of ease in my business. I like to learn and test new programs, new platforms and processes.
If you’re still reading this, I assume you are a Generation X Entrepreneur yourself…if so, where do you fall in terms of the items I mentioned above?
We are a unique breed and we have unique business questions and support needs. We don’t have to do everything ourselves or the hard way…even if it is ingrained within us to do so 🙂
